Supporting almost 12,000 professionals, the Partnership has created a community for energy professionals and academics and a scientific and technical base for industry. Read more » Australia Launches Global CCS InstituteUCGP Foundation MemberUCGP is delighted to have been invited to become a foundation member of the Global Carbon Capture and Storage Institute. The Australian Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, proposed the establishment of the GCCSI on 19 September 2008, to accelerate the broad deployment of CCS technology and has said he wants the Institute operational by January 2009. Australia has pledged funding up to AU$100m per year to the Canberra-based Institute. UCGP believes the relationship will help highlight the need for research and implementation of UCG with CCS in the future. What is Underground Coal Gasification?The Basics of UCGUCG (Underground Coal Gasification) is the conversion of coal, whilst still in the ground, into a a high quality synthetic gas that can be processed to provide fuels for power generation, diesel fuels, jet fuels and hydrogen. It is safe, cleaner and less intrusive than conventional mining and can utilise much of the worlds otherwise unmineable coal reserves.
