Key Facts on UCG

UCG is a method of converting un-worked coal,while still in the ground,into a combustible gas which can be used for industrial heating, power generation or the manufacture of hydrogen, synthetic natural gas or diesel fuel.

UCG in combination with CO2 capture and Storage (CCS) is recognised as an attractive route to carbon abatement from coal, as the process has all the benefits of pre-combustion processing, normally associated with gasification.

Feasibility studies of UCG are currently underway in most coal producing countries. The UK has recently concluded an extensive review and Asia, S Africa, Australia are among the countries with active UCG programmes.

UCG is both an extraction and a coal conversion process in one step.
