Climate Change UCGP - invited to become a foundation member of the GCCSI.Australia Launches Global CCS Institute - UCGP Founding Member UCGP has become a founder member of the Global Carbon Capture and Storage Institute (GCCSI). Launched at a Preparatory meeting in London last November, strong support was offered to the Australian Government's initiative. Attended by more than 165 delegates, the meeting included representatives from 21 key countries including China, India, Japan, the United Kingdom, Norway, Netherlands, the United States, and Canada as well as multinational companies and a range of research organisations. The Global CCS Institute, headquartered in Australia, will provide international policy and management oversight to the goal of delivering at least 20 commercial scale CCS plants around the world by 2020. The Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, announced the establishment of the Global Carbon Capture and Storage Initiative with a commitment to provide $100 million per annum to fund the Australian-based Institute. The launch has attracted several major energy industry names as founding members: Alstom, Shell, Mitsubishi Corporation, Xstrata Coal, Anglo-American, Rio Tinto, Schlumberger and The Climate Group. UCGP is proud to have been give founder member status of the GCCS Institute and hopes that all members will support and engage with this initiative which is vital to the future of the fossil fuel industry. Growth of UCG Partnership In the past few months UCGP officers have been busy making appearances and presentations at leading conferences and energy meetings around the world. The result of this work has led to an increase in membership and a significant increase in interest towards commercial UCG projects and feasability studies. Succesful trips to China, India and Europe have seen the partnership grow at an unprecedented rate. Coupled with the level of attendance at last years UCG Training Course, this makes for an exciting period of growth and activity. We have now initiated an Advisory Council and the UCGP Research Group. The Advisory Council will assist in supporting the work and growth of the Partnership. The UCGP Research Group will support the applications we receive to support research projects as well as establish collaborative research between academia and industry. Both these groups will assist with the growth and focus of the Partnership in the coming year. 4th UCGP International Workshop and Conference - Another success Following on from the success of the 2008 UCG Conference, we again held a two day Workshop and Conference in London. Over a hundred delegatesfrom 24 different countries participated, many for the first time. The full programme which included presenations from Russia, Slovakia, Poland and Australia included topics such as CCS and international energy patents. A full review will be contained in the April Newsletter The Global Roundtable on Climate Change brought together more than 100 high-level, critical stakeholders from all regions of the world, including senior executives from the private sector and leaders of international governmental and non-governmental organizations. the discussions explored areas of potential consensus regarding core scientific, technological, and economic issues critical to shaping sound public policies on climate change. http://www.earthinstitute.columbia.edu/grocc/ Representatives of many of the organisations and initiatives in the alliance were brought together in Berlin on 16 May 2007 by e5, The European Business Council for Sustainable Energy and hosted by E.ON Energy.
