First UCGP Training Course a Success

We had hoped  this would  be the first of many courses run by UCG Partnership in conjunction with universities and it certainly looks that way.

The course was a resounding success and we have already received enquiries asking for details of future courses.

We would like to thank all the participants especially The Institute of Petroleum Engineering at Heriot-Watt University for all their help and support in this venture. Feedback from those who attended has been both positive and  insightful and we will use this as a basis for future course offerings. A full report on the Training Course can be found it Members Newsletter No.6 October 2007

Past Training Courses

Course No. 1/07 - UCG Seam Appraisal and Engineering

Dates: Sunday 16th September 2007 - Friday 21st September 2007

Location: Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh

Description:

This one week course will treat UCG as a reservoir development challenge. The UCG feasibility study developed by HWU for the Forth Estuary will be the central core of the course. It will cover site selection criteria, site appraisal and model builidng, coal geology and hydrogeology. well design and drilling, 3D seismic, completions, surface plant specification for operating the wells, environmental impact assessments and economics. It will also introduce the basic principles of underground coal gasification, and what is required of the coal and overburden to establish a satisfactory commercial process. Since HWU have Forth Estuary 3D geological models already installed in their visionarium, and software for interactive well planning, delegates will given design exercises using real geological data. Seeing it all in 3D makes it easier to understand. This course will be delivered by Institute of Petroleum Engineering staff at HWU and UCGP officers and associates

UCG Surface Plant, Design and Operation

Course 2 will be concerned in detail with the control and operation of the UCG process and plant required to control and monitor the process underground and the subsequent cleaning and preparation of the gas at surface for transmission and utilisation. It would cover the modeling of the UCG cavity as a kinetic and fluid flow process, and discuss methods for assessing roof collapse and subsidence. Design exercise will consider the plant required at the local UCG site for oxidant injection, the separation of solids and the recycling of produced water. Specifications for the high pressure transmission of crude syngas, and the subsequent processing into clean gas will be covered. A special section on UCG with carbon capture and storage will be included to deal with methods for CO2 capture, the compression to dense phase CO2 and the requirements of transmission.

A two week course is anticipated for the above syllabus to be held in the Chemical Engineering Department of a well recognized UK University.
