Education, Training and Workshops in Underground Coal Gasification

Education and Training in UCG technology is a major focus of the Partnership's work. We continue to develop training programmes by working in tandem with Academics and Universities worldwide to improve and encourage more transfer of technical expertise. We introduced a successful Workshop day to our 2008 and 2008 Conferences, which is now a permanent feature and have organised in depth UCG Workshops at several leading energy conferences around the world, recently in India with the EU, plus half day Workshops at the SMi   gasification Conference, London Jume 2009 and at the Pittsburgh Coal Conference, September 2009

UCGP has been commissioned by leading energy organisations to present bespoke in-house training/workshops to their employees and technicians and we have recently commenced a register of employers and employees in the industry to support the end use of this knowledge base.

New 2009 UCG Training Course No. 1/09

Date:14th - 18th September 2009  Location: Imperial College London

A must for all in Mining, Geology, Gasification, Horizontal and Directional Drilling, Chemical Engineering, Syngas production, Hydrogeology, GTL, CSG, CCS  and providers of services to the gasification industry.

Join us to find out how your skills or services can be part of  this rapidly growing industry .

Our third week long UCG course will cover all the basic components of UCG Technology and give a good grounding in the process and applications this exciting clean coal extraction method offers. This bespoke course has been carefully developed by UCGP and Imperial College to deliver a comprehensive understanding of UCG Technology and the potential it offers as a safe low carbon coal process

UCG requires a multi-disciplinary integration of knowledge and skills - geology, hydrogeology, directional drilling, gasification, engineering, processing, modelling -  so there are many who already have the required skills and experience. As the industry grows so does the need for trained and enlightened operatives.

Who should attend?

Geologists, Chemical and Mining Engineers, Hydrogeologists, Oil and Gas specialists, Project Managers, Energy Software providers, Regulators, Bankers, Lawyers, Accountants, Graduates and Students who wish to become part of this growing industry will wish to join this course, which is limited to 25 places.

Course Description:

The one week course will cover all aspects of UCG including site selection criteria, site appraisal and model building, coal geology and hydrogeology, well design and drilling, 3D seismic, completions, surface plant specification for operating the wells, environmental impact assessments, UCG with CCS and economic viability and financial modelling. It will also introduce the basic principles of underground coal gasification, and what is required of the coal and overburden to establish a satisfactory commercial process. The course will be delivered by leading lecturers from Imperial College London, UCGP officers and external speakers.

Course fee: UCGP Members £1500 VAT per delegate. Non Members £1800 VAT per delegate

Course fee includes tuition fees, training equipment, course materials. lunch, refreshments and the course dinner on Thursday evening - it does not include accommodation. All attendees will receive hard copies of all presentations and course materials, bios of lecturers, plus full course CD

Read what previous course attendees say:

It was an interesting week and I certainly came with a few preconceived ideas about UCG which were blown into little pieces very quickly! I really enjoyed meeting the attendees and the diversity both in terms of cultures, countries and interests certainly added to the interest. All of this with the common goal of pushing UCG technology forward made for a very rewarding experience. - Clyde Foster, MegChem

I very much enjoyed the course and also the chance to make some new contacts. The multinational nature of the participants and the lecturers led to a very lively time - Peter Dryburgh, Wardell Armstrong

Thank you for the perfect organisation, the course was really useful for us and it gave us the opportunity to meet with so many different and interesting people and to make new contacts and friends. We hope that in the near future we will have the chance  to attend a UCG higher level  training course! - Donka Bukolska, Overgas

Past Training Courses

Course No.1/08 - UCG Basic, 22nd -26th September 2008  Imperial College London,

Our second residential training course, this time in conjunction with Imperial College London, had an impressive international mix of attendees, from differing age groups and backgrounds, whose  levels of experience and knowledge kept all the presenters and lecturers on their toes throughout the 5 day course. Delegates from Brazil, Bulgaria, Russia, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Vietnam, South Africa, UK and Germany made up the team of 25 attendees.

The one week course covered all aspects of UCG including site selection criteria, site appraisal and model building, coal geology and hydrogeology, well design and drilling, 3D seismic, completions, surface plant specification for operating the wells, environmental impact assessments, and economics. It also introduced the basic principles of underground coal gasification, and what is required of the coal and overburden to establish a satisfactory commercial process. The course was delivered by staff of Imperial College London, UCGP officers and external speakers. The full course programme,  course attendees, and biographies of lecturers and presenters can be found on the link here:

We have received many emails from the participants, all thanking us for what was an enjoyable and informative course. We know that many have formed professional relationships, which only adds to the value of attending a UCG Training Course.

Course No. 1/07 - UCG Seam Appraisal and Engineering

16th September 2007 - Friday 21st September 200, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh

Description:

This one week course treated UCG as a reservoir development challenge. The UCG feasibility study developed by HWU for the Forth Estuary was the central core of the course. It covered site selection criteria, site appraisal and model builidng, coal geology and hydrogeology. well design and drilling, 3D seismic, completions, surface plant specification for operating the wells, environmental impact assessments and economics. It also introduced the basic principles of underground coal gasification, and what is required of the coal and overburden to establish a satisfactory commercial process. Since HWU have Forth Estuary 3D geological models already installed in their visionarium, and software for interactive well planning, delegates were given design exercises using real geological data. Seeing it all in 3D made it easier to understand. This course was delivered by Institute of Petroleum Engineering staff at HWU and UCGP officers and associates
